learning salesforce admin - the best way

one of us is leaving his current company to go into consulting. In doing so, he wanted to share the knowledge with me. So he had me replicate the salesforce template that he created. That is, I looked at his developer's edition of salesforce and worked on recreating of all the items in my developer's edition of salesforce. That way I was able to understand all the the nuances that were important for a proper implementation of salesforce.com. Along the way, I asked him about wasn't clear to me, thereby also helping him to improve the documentation. This salesforce template replication is a great way to transfer knowledge in a sysematic way.

why we like salesforce.com

There is a lot of great CRM software out there, from ACT!, to infusionsoft, to SAP. The biggest reason that we like salesforce.com is that it is not just a CRM tool, but also a web development platform. salesforce was recently featured in a leading business magazine, Business 2.0 I believe, as one of 4 internet companies that were creating platforms for the internet. We think the salesforce is positioning itself to be a central location for web applications that everything else wants to plug into, just as Microsoft has done for the desktop. But salesforce takes the idea a step further by actually creating an environment for business application web development. It may very well become the windows of the web.
